Spotlight Youth Theatre’s “Much Ado About Nothing” – A Southern, 1980s Spin on a Shakespearean Classic
Spotlight Youth Theatre’s latest production, Much Ado About Nothing, brings a bold, clever twist to the Bard’s beloved comedy. Set in 1985 at a hotel in Messina, Georgia, this rendition pulses with charm, energy, and an impressive blend of classic Shakespeare and retro Americana. With a whimsical set complete with string lights, multiple doors, and a classic balcony, the stage transforms into a lively Southern hotel that perfectly houses the mischief and romance of the play.
Jay Schwab delivers an excellent, believable performance as Beatrice—sharp, commanding, and completely captivating. She strikes the perfect balance between wit and vulnerability, bringing one of Shakespeare’s most iconic heroines to life with confidence and nuance. Opposite her, Chris Gamble is a hilarious and charismatic Benedick, commanding the stage with comedic timing and infectious charm. Their chemistry brings the famed “merry war” of words to life with delightful authenticity.
William Richardson shines as Claudio, navigating the character’s emotional highs and lows with striking maturity. His performance is both powerful and moving. Maya McElhaney complements him beautifully as Hero, sweet and genuine with a perfect Southern accent that grounds her character in the Georgia setting.
One of the production’s standout creative choices is the use of a Girl Scout troop as a neighborhood block watch—a gaggle of spirited girls who not only serve as comic relief but also cleverly expose DJ as the villain. This modern twist adds humor and flair while enhancing the storytelling in a way that’s accessible and fun.
Equally impressive is the entire cast’s command of Shakespearean language. Every performer tackled the complex dialogue with ease and clarity, mastering the rhythm and meaning without missing a beat. Their delivery made the centuries-old text feel fresh, engaging, and perfectly in place within the play’s reimagined world.
Overall, this Much Ado is a vibrant, refreshing take on Shakespeare, brought to life by a talented young cast and thoughtful direction. It’s a playful yet heartfelt production that captures the timelessness of love, laughter, and a little bit of chaos.
